Editorial policy

You may be reading this on a bad day, so it has to be right, clear and honest about what it doesn't know.

Useful first

Every page should answer a real question someone has after an accident: what to do, what a word means, what an offer is worth, whether to hire a lawyer. If a page doesn't help you decide or do something, it shouldn't exist.

Sources

We rely on primary and official sources: legislation, court rules and judgments, regulators, government agencies, lawyer regulators and professional bodies, and public-health organisations. We don't copy settlement figures from law firm marketing, and we don't publish statistics we can't trace.

Where you live matters

Accident law is local. When a rule applies only in certain places, such as the UK whiplash tariff, New York's no-fault deadlines or Ontario's limitation period, we say so. When rules vary widely, we tell you what to check rather than guess.

Independence

No law firm or insurer pays us to appear here or to shape what we write. If that ever changes, through advertising or a lawyer directory, we'll label it clearly and it won't change our conclusions.

Reviews and updates

Pages show the date they were last reviewed. When a law changes, we update the pages it affects. Mistakes are fixed under our corrections policy.

Effective September 25, 2026.
